Transliteration is in core
One big step to get pathauto functionality into core, is the support for transliterations!
You might wonder what is a transliteration: It's converting unicode strings to ASCII chars. What does that mean?
Let's build an international site, so people will upload files
with full unicode filenames, for example (that's greek).
Once you start to use this file you will see many potential problems:
- Imagecache can't support these files due to missing PHP features.
- Users have a problem to reuse these files, as they get confused by all this special chars.
- URLs look ugly without transliteration.
Transliteration now tries to convert the greek filename into a
human readable one: "Elliniki Dimokratia.jpg".
If you want to help to get pathauto into core, look athttp://drupal.org/node/229568 which provides you some more issues.
Thanks for working on that issue (http://drupal.org/node/567832 ):
PS: You might see that i couldn't use the greek letters in that post (without faking it as image) which is an obvious sign why it's good to get transliteration into core.
