Happy Holidays: Node.js Chatroom Demo Site on Heroku Backend
Check it out. A quick site built with node.js backend on heroku and Drupal front-end with chatroom module @ http://chatroom.int3c.com/
Here’s the story…
Two days ago I was thinking that I should figure out how to deploy node.js for Drupal on Heroku. The goal being that I wanted to post a demo site of Chatroom module and a few of the chatroom submodules I’ve created. I’ve been using linux virtual servers but that’s definitely an overkill if all you want is node.js backend for some Drupal stuff.
I figured I’d find some time one of these evenings and do it. But about an hour or so ago today (Dec 20th, 2012) I got this tweet:
“Drupal, NodeJS, Pantheon, and Heroku” <— that’s a heck of a blog post, @amitaibu! http://ow.ly/ggTrL
It linked to this super straight-forward post on node.js setup for Drupal. It even included a nifty little code sample. It basically tells you everything you’d need to setup Heroku and Drupal for Node.js.
In about 10-15 minutes I was set up. A few minutes later I had the chatroom modules enabled and wam! bam! chatroom was rocking.
Over the next 30 minutes, I added a few fixes and clean ups here and there so it looks decent and responsive in its Drupal Bartik glory. I wrote up a short explanation and viola: Drupal Chatroom with Node.js Demo site lives!
All built on open source goodness. Tis the season to be giving. Happy Holidays World!
PS — Hopefully this doesn’t explode my server :P Thanks to all the wonderful Drupal folks who help make this magic happen.
